I emailed UNLV in regards to the game I went to a few weeks back (see my previous post). And they actually responded. I am a little surprised I heard back from them. below is the email. I had also emailed a couple of the news stations, but never heard a thing. It is nice to know that the university sees this as wrong and is wanting to try and do something about it. Maybe the students won't change a thing, but it makes me feel better to know I didn't stay quiet about it.
Good morning Megan,I apologize for the delay in this email. Just wanted to get back to you regarding your email about the actions of some in the student section during the recent BYU-UNLV game. Please know that your concerns were shared by many and those inside the athletics department as well as leadership within the University reacted immediately to work with student leadership in addressing the situation. While we don't pretend that we can control everything in such an environment, we too believe in protecting the integrity of our games and maintaining their family-friendly environment... I would also like to point out - as most people did not see this - that is was UNLV president Neal Smatresk himself who personally went to the student section to put a stop to the chat. He took immediate action and it paid off... As an alum, I can tell you we are fortunate to have him here. For what it is worth, your concerns hit home with me as well. My wife and I sit a couple of sections away from the student section with our 9 and 7 year olds. Like you, we too were embarrassed and offended as our children looked at us wondering what was being said. My wife and I both have two degrees from this great university and it was a tough moment, for sure. That said, the student crowds have grown over the past 3-4 seasons and have made the energy in the T&M electric on many occasions. The actions during the BYU game are not typical and we are hoping to avoid such issues in the future. We are urging them to stay positive as we continue to create a great atmosphere in the T&M for our team and our fans.I hope, in someway, this email helps you to know that we are not accepting of this type of behavior at all and actions were taken immediately. Thank you for your continued support and we surely hope this occurrence does not keep you from coming back to support our student-athletes. Have a great week, Megan. Go Rebels!D.J.
Ryan and I went to the UNLV vs. BYU Basketball game last week. I was wearing my Rebel red and Ryan had on his BYU shirt. I am a student at UNLV now, my dad went to UNLV, and having been born and raised in Henderson, I consider myself a Rebel fan. So, we walk into the game just as they are starting the fireworks show and introducing the players (a really cool tradition, if you've never seen it, they turn the lights off and play the fight song. It makes you get really pumped for the game). The stadium was packed with fans, both young and old. Some wearing blue, but the majority had red on. Just as the game is about to begin the whole student section, which we were sitting in, starts chanting, "F*** you, BYU." I was appalled, to say the least. Both Ryan and I looked at each other and remarked how classless they were making UNLV look. This is a family sporting event. I look around and see kids and families. My nine year old nephew was in the crowd. This happened a few times throughout the game. I am shocked, disgusted and upset at the UNLV fans who felt it necessary to chant such vulgar language in a public arena. I get that there will be annoying, drunk fans who choose to yell out all kinds of swear words, but for a whole section of fans to be yelling that, it is disgraceful. UNLV Athletic Department: You need to address this! What does that say about the integrity of the school to let the whole student section use that kind of profanity? I walked out of the stadium that night ashamed to be wearing red.
...5 to go!!!
The down sides of being preggo...
- heartburn
- gas
- cramps
- hungry ALL the time
- sleeping
- my clothes don't fit (thank goodness for belly bands)
The up sides of being preggo:
- I get to eat whenever I want and not feel guilty (the word gluttony comes to mind...)
- I got to feel our little peanut move the other day for the first time. That small moment made all of the above sooo worth it :)
I haven't told my students yet that I am pregnant. And, surprisingly, no one has asked me. They have, however, been asking the other teachers. One little girl said to a teacher I work with, "Me and my friends think Mrs. Fox is pregnant, but we don't want to ask her." Another teacher came up to me today and said, "Someone asked me if you were pregnant or just gaining weight!" Kids are funny. I don't think I am going to say anything -just wait until someone is brave enough to ask!!!
